# hence

adverb (hence)

«hence» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition and Early Modern English — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

1. (formal) Hence means «so» or «for this reason». [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/H/hence/#m1)
2. (formal) Hence means from now: «three weeks hence» means three weeks from now. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/H/hence/#m2)
3. (old) Hence means from here, away. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/H/hence/#m3)

### In the lessons

In maths and science writing «hence» joins a fact to what follows from it: «x + 3 = 7, hence x = 4.» In exam questions «Hence find…» means use the answer you just got to find the next thing. Everyday speech says «so» or «that's why».

### Examples

- It rained all night, hence the puddles. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/H/hence/#x1)
- 3 × 4 = 12, hence 12 ÷ 4 = 3. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/H/hence/#x2)

- But now go hence quickly with thy friends. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/H/hence/#x7)

### Note

Formal; rare in speech. In maths exams «Hence» means you must use the previous answer; «hence or otherwise» means you may use another way too. Do not confuse with «hens».

## In Jewish tradition

An old word meaning "from here" or "away from this place."

**Interpretation.** Joseph makes his brothers swear to carry his bones up from Egypt. Tradition says Moses kept that promise at the Exodus.

## Early Modern English

### Meaning

In the first two sentences it means away from this place. In the third it means for this reason. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/emode/H/hence/#m1)

### Then and now

Today we say "from here" or "away from here" for the place sense, and "therefore" for the reason sense. The place sense is old-fashioned, and the third sentence uses the reason sense as we do.

### Examples

- And he said unto Him: 'If Thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence. (Torah EXO.33.15, JPS 1917) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/emode/H/hence/#x1)
- But now go hence quickly with thy friends. (The Jungle Book) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/emode/H/hence/#x2)
- Hence, God loves the number seven under the whole heaven. \[37\] (In the whole nature.) (Sefer Yetzirah, Kalisch 1877) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/emode/H/hence/#x3)

### Note

Today: from here; therefore.
