# ii

Roman numeral (ii, II); abbreviation

«ii» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

1. The Roman numeral for 2, written ii or II. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/I/ii/#m1)
2. Used in lists and in names to show «the second»: «Elizabeth II», «part ii», «World War II». [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/I/ii/#m2)

### In the lessons

In maths Roman numerals: I = 1, II = 2, III = 3, IV = 4, V = 5. In books and lists it numbers sections: (i), (ii), (iii). After a name it means «the second»: «Henry II» is read «Henry the Second». Phrases: part II, question (ii), Elizabeth II.

### Examples

- The Roman numeral II means 2. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/I/ii/#x1)

- III minus II equals I. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/I/ii/#x6)

### Note

Not a word but a number written with letters. Small letters (i, ii, iii) are often used for sub-parts of a question. After a king's or queen's name, say «the Second». In Roman numerals II + II = IV, not IIII (though some clocks show IIII).
