### Meaning

1. (euphemism, jargon) said by a hospital about a patient who may be badly hurt or ill but is not in danger right now and is not in pain.
2. (literal) comfortable, at ease.

### In the lessons

Used by hospitals, police and the news to give a short, calm update about a patient without private details; it can hide how serious the injury is. Register: official, medical jargon, news; mainly UK and Ireland.

### Examples

- News: The driver was taken to hospital, where she is in a comfortable condition.
- The boy who fell from the tree is now in a comfortable condition.
- Police said both men were in a comfortable condition.
- The hospital says Grandad is in a comfortable condition tonight.
- A spokesman said the climber was in a comfortable condition after the rescue.
- Chat: «comfortable condition» means not dying, right?

### Note

It does not mean the person feels fine or can go home; they may have serious injuries. It is better than «serious» or «critical». Plain meaning: not in danger for now.
