### Meaning

1. (euphemism, polite) working to stay free of an addiction to alcohol or drugs, usually with help.
2. (literal) getting better after an illness, injury or operation; also about an economy getting stronger.

### In the lessons

Used by people about themselves and by others to speak kindly and respectfully about addiction; it shows the person is making an effort. Register: polite, everyday, health; all regions.

### Examples

- My uncle has been in recovery for five years and runs marathons now.
- She talks openly about being in recovery.
- News: The singer, who is in recovery, will tour again.
- The patient is in recovery after the operation.
- Doctors say the economy is in recovery.

### Note

Context decides: about addiction it means staying sober; after an operation it means healing; «the recovery room» is in a hospital. It is respectful, not shameful. Plain words: recovering from addiction.
