## In Jewish tradition

It means pleading to God for others. In Jeremiah, God forbids the prophet to plead for the people because their guilt is too great.

**Interpretation.** Tradition notes that Moses and other prophets often pleaded for Israel, so this ban shows how serious the people's sins had become.
