### Meaning

(euphemism, official) a person forced to leave home by war, violence or disaster who has not crossed into another country, so is not legally a refugee.

### In the lessons

Used by the UN, charities, governments and the news. It is a precise legal term, but it can also soften the picture of people who have lost their homes. Register: official, legal, news; all regions.

### Examples

- News: Millions of internally displaced people are living in camps.
- The floods made thousands of families internally displaced persons.
- An internally displaced person still lives inside their own country.
- The charity brings food and blankets to internally displaced people.
- Geography lesson: We compared refugees and internally displaced persons.
- Officials counted the IDPs in each camp.

### Note

It is not the same as «refugee»: a refugee has crossed a border; an IDP has not. «Displaced» means moved from home by force. Plain words: people driven from their homes inside their own country.
