### Meaning

1. (euphemism, official, US) being fired or dismissed from a job against one's wishes.
2. (literal, legal) any separation that someone did not choose, such as from the army.

### In the lessons

Used by companies, the military and HR departments in letters and forms to describe sacking without strong words. It hides the hard news. Register: official, HR jargon; mainly US.

### Examples

- Your contract ends with an involuntary separation on the last working day of the month.
- Form: Reason for leaving — involuntary separation.
- News: The firm announced 500 involuntary separations.
- Soldiers who leave by involuntary separation may get some pay.
- Chat: «involuntary separation» = they sacked me
- The letter said «involuntary separation», but Dad said, «They fired me.»

### Note

It is not about couples separating. «Involuntary» means not by choice. It sounds cold and bureaucratic. Plain words: fired, sacked.
