### Meaning

(euphemism, official) a person who has come into or stays in a country without the official permission or papers.

### In the lessons

Used by governments, the UN, charities and some news outlets to avoid «illegal immigrant», which many think is harsh. Register: official, news; all regions, especially Europe and the UK.

### Examples

- News: The boat carried forty irregular migrants.
- The report counts irregular migrants arriving by sea.
- Charities give food and medical help to irregular migrants.
- The minister promised new rules for irregular migrants.
- Teacher: «Irregular migrant» and «illegal immigrant» describe the same situation in different words.
- Some irregular migrants later apply to stay as refugees.

### Note

It does not mean «unusual traveller». Different words for the same people show different attitudes, so news choices matter. Plain words: someone without permission to be in the country.
