## In Jewish tradition

Ishmael is Abraham's son by Hagar and is circumcised with him, and Abraham prays that he may live before God. Chronicles lists his sons beside Isaac among the sons of Abraham.

**Interpretation.** Tradition counts Ishmael as the ancestor of the Arab peoples, while the covenant line goes through Isaac.
