### In the lessons

In road safety lessons it is a key danger word, mostly used in the USA and Canada, where jaywalking can be against the law. Children learn to cross at crossings, wait for the green man, look both ways and never jaywalk between parked cars. Noun: «jaywalker», «jaywalking».

### Note

Regular verb: jaywalked. Mainly American and Canadian; in the UK people say «cross the road carelessly» and jaywalking is not usually a crime there. A «jay» was an old word for a silly, careless person.
