## In Jewish tradition

In the Torah jewels are objects of silver and gold. The Israelites asked the Egyptians for them when they left Egypt. In the prophets they are the fine ornaments of Jerusalem, which God gave and which she misused for idols. In Proverbs, wise speech is called a precious jewel.

**Interpretation.** Tradition sees the Egyptian jewels as the fulfilment of God's promise to Abraham that his children would leave with great wealth, and as payment for their years of labour. Ezekiel is read as warning that God's gifts must not be used for idol worship.
