# judo

noun (judo — uncountable)

«judo» in the English dictionary: everyday — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

Judo is a Japanese martial art and Olympic sport in which you try to throw or hold down your opponent using balance and skill, not punches or kicks. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/J/judo/#m1)

### In the lessons

In PE and clubs, children learn judo on mats, wearing a white or blue jacket (judogi) and a coloured belt that shows their level. Judo teaches respect: you bow, follow rules and learn to fall safely (breakfalls). The name means «the gentle way». Phrases: «do judo», «judo club», «judo belt», «black belt in judo».
