## In Jewish tradition

In the Torah it describes Jeshurun, a poetic name for Israel, who grew fat and turned against God like a pampered animal.

**Interpretation.** Commentators read it as a warning that comfort and plenty can make people forget God. Jeshurun is a loving name for Israel, meaning the upright one.

### Examples

- But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked — thou didst wax fat, thou didst grow thick, thou didst become gross — and he forsook God who made him, and contemned the Rock of his salvation. (Torah DEU.32.15, JPS 1917) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/K/kick/#x1)
- Wherefore kick ye at My sacrifice and at Mine offering, which I have commanded in My habitation; and honourest thy sons above Me, to make yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel My people? (Prophets 1SA.2.29, JPS 1917) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/K/kick/#x2)

### Note
