## In Jewish tradition

God calls Israel "a kingdom of priests," meaning a people set apart to serve God and teach others. In the prophets and writings, a kingdom is also the realm of a human king, like Solomon's, and the great powers of the nations are called kingdoms.

**Interpretation.** Tradition reads this as Israel's mission to live in holiness and to be an example to the world. The prophets are read as saying that the kingdoms of the nations will one day answer to God.
