## In Jewish tradition

A kiss in the Tanakh is a sign of greeting and family love, as when Jacob kisses Rachel and Isaac blesses Jacob. The psalms use it as a figure of speech, when righteousness and peace "kiss", and Job speaks of a kiss of the hand as a sign of worship.

**Interpretation.** The commentators note that kisses between relatives show closeness, and Jacob's kiss for Rachel is read as joy at finding family after a long journey. Psalm 85 is read as picturing justice and peace joined in harmony, and Job's words as a warning against false worship of sun or moon. Proverbs warns that an enemy's kisses can be false.
