## In Jewish tradition

In these texts "laid up" often means stored or kept safe, as the rods were put away before the LORD in the tent. It is the old past form of "lay", and it can also mean put in place, as a corner-stone is laid, or hands placed on someone.

**Interpretation.** In Numbers 17, Aaron's rod that budded was laid up before the testimony as a sign. Tradition reads it as God's proof of Aaron's priesthood. In Job, God's questions about who laid the corner-stone of the earth are read as showing God as maker of the world.
