## In Jewish tradition

In the prophets and Chronicles it means the heads of the people, such as the "leaders of the flock", a figure of speech for the rulers who were like shepherds, and the commanders of an army.

**Interpretation.** In Sefer Yetzirah, the twelve "leaders" are twelve body parts, each tied to a Hebrew letter and a month. Jeremiah's wailing leaders are read as the kings and rulers who failed their people and will fall.
