### Meaning

(euphemism, jargon) an old computer system or software that is out of date but still used because changing it is hard or costly.

### In the lessons

Used by IT workers and companies to describe old technology without calling it «old» or «broken»; can make it sound like valuable inheritance. Register: jargon, technical; all regions.

### Examples

- The bank still runs on a legacy system.
- We can't add the new feature to the legacy system.
- Chat: «legacy system» = ancient and no one knows how it works
- News: The hospital's legacy systems caused delays.
- The school's legacy system can't send texts to parents.
- Engineers are moving the data off the legacy system.

### Note

«Legacy» normally means something good left by someone who died; in tech it means old and hard to change. Plain words: old, outdated software.
