### Note

Not a dictionary word on its own: do not use «liv» in proper writing; write «living» or the full name. As a name it starts with a capital L. The word «live» (verb or adjective) is different and must be spelled with an e.

## In Jewish tradition

In the family lists of Genesis, the word counts how many years each person lived before having a son. In the Psalms and Lamentations "living" means all that is alive, and "the land of the living" means this world in which a person walks before God.

**Interpretation.** Tradition notes the very long lives of the early generations and reads the lists as the unbroken chain from Adam to Noah and to Abraham. It reads the psalms as teaching that God feeds every living thing and that life is a gift for serving Him.
