### In the lessons

In maths problems it is mostly a word of the story; sometimes people or animals living in a place are counted (4 people live in the house). It tells where things are, not what to do. In science: living things grow, need food and water, and reproduce. In safety: never touch a live wire. In stories: «they lived happily ever after».

### Examples

- 4 people live in the house. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/L/live/#x1)

### Note

Two sounds: «to live» (liv) and «a live show» (lyve). Trap: «lives» can be the verb (she lives here) or the plural of «life» (a cat has 9 lives, said with a long i). «Alive» comes after a verb (the fish is alive); «live» comes before a noun (live fish). Maths: no operation on its own.

## In Jewish tradition

It also means to live on, as in "live for ever," a greeting to a king, and the question whether the dead may live again.

**Interpretation.** Judaism puts great weight on life. The law says saving a life overrides almost every commandment, and the toast "L'chaim" means "to life." Job's questions about whether the wicked live and prosper, and whether a dead man lives again, are read by the tradition as a search for God's justice and the hope of resurrection.
