## In Jewish tradition

It means to stay for the night, as when travelers ask for a place to sleep. Genesis uses it for Rebekah's family offering Abraham's servant room. The prophets and psalms also use it for thoughts or qualities that stay in a person or place, as righteousness lodged in Jerusalem, and for a person who would lodge in the wilderness.

**Interpretation.** Tradition praises hospitality, hachnasat orchim, and holds up Abraham and Rebekah's family as examples of welcoming guests. Isaiah's words are read as a lament that the city once full of justice had fallen to murder.
