### Meaning

(euphemism, old-fashioned) a child born to parents who are not married to each other.

### In the lessons

Used by the news and gossip, often about famous people. It was once used to hide shame; now it is mostly gossip language. Register: old-fashioned, tabloid; all regions.

### Examples

- News: The singer has a secret love child.
- In the old story, the prince had a love child.
- Gossip magazines love stories about love children.
- Chat: «love child» is a tabloid word
- Joke: This car is the love child of a bus and a bicycle.

### Note

It sounds dramatic and gossipy. It is not polite to call a real child this. In jokes it means a mix of two things. Plain words: a child of unmarried parents.
