### Meaning

1. (euphemism, jargon) a person who has died, in funeral-industry talk («your loved one»).
2. (literal) a family member or close friend.

### In the lessons

Funeral homes and hospitals use it to speak gently to families. In everyday talk it simply means someone you love. Register: polite, jargon; all regions.

### Examples

- Funeral director: We will take care of your loved one.
- Spend time with your loved ones.
- News: Families searched for their loved ones after the earthquake.
- Chat: hug your loved ones tonight
- Hospital: Visitors may see their loved ones until eight o'clock.
- We remember loved ones we have lost.

### Note

In a funeral home, «your loved one» means the dead person; elsewhere it means someone alive and dear. Plain words: the dead person / someone dear.
