### Meaning

1. (euphemism, official, UK) lost one's job because the job was no longer needed.
2. (literal) made unnecessary.

### In the lessons

Used by UK, Irish and Australian employers and the news to describe job losses formally, suggesting the job, not the person, was the problem. Register: official, everyday; UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand.

### Examples

- Dad was made redundant when the factory closed.
- News: 300 staff will be made redundant.
- She got redundancy pay after twenty years.
- Chat: made redundant today, time to job hunt
- The new machine made the old one redundant.
- Maths: If 15% of 200 workers are made redundant, 30 lose their jobs.

### Note

It does not mean the person is useless; it means the job was cut. In the US people say «laid off». Plain words: lost one's job.
