## In Jewish tradition

In the Tanakh a servant could be a Hebrew who worked for a time or a slave. Hebrew servants had to be freed after a set time.

**Interpretation.** Jeremiah reminds the people of the law of freeing servants. Tradition holds that this law shows that every person belongs to God and not to another human being.
