Adjective only; it goes before a noun («maritime history»). Formal-sounding word; in everyday speech people say «sea» or «seaside». Spelling: mari-time (from Latin «mare», sea). Do not confuse with «marine» (living in the sea: marine animals) — maritime is more about ships, trade and coasts.
