## In Jewish tradition

Isaiah says a servant's face was marred, and tradition has often linked this to Israel's suffering. Jeremiah's spoiled girdle is a sign of how a ruined people is useless.

**Interpretation.** Jeremiah's girdle shows that Israel, once close to God like a belt, became spoiled by pride. Jews and Christians read Isaiah's "marred" servant in different ways.
