### In the lessons

In maths, the maximum of a set of data is the largest value; range = maximum − minimum. In science, a maximum thermometer records the highest temperature. In safety, signs show the maximum weight on a lift or the maximum speed on a road. Phrases: maximum speed, maximum of, at the maximum, maximum temperature, maximum score, to the max.

### Note

Opposite: minimum. Abbreviation: max. "A maximum of 8" means 8 or fewer; 8 is allowed, 9 is not. Plural: maximums (everyday) or maxima (in maths and science).
