### In the lessons

In school: memorise times tables, spellings, a poem or lines in a play. In church: memorise a Bible verse or prayer. It tells the reader someone learnt something by heart.

### Note

UK -ise, US -ize; both correct. Phrase: «learn by heart» means the same. Memorising is not the same as understanding; good learners do both. In maths, memorising number facts (like 7 × 8 = 56) makes harder sums faster.
