# mirth

noun (mirth – uncountable)

«mirth» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

Laughter, fun and great happiness, especially among a group of people. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/M/mirth/#m1)

### In the lessons

A slightly old, literary word. In The Wind in the Willows the banquet and the Christmas carols at Mole End are full of mirth; in Alice the Hatter's tea party is anything but. Stories say «roars of mirth», «shaking with mirth». Today in speech we would say «laughter» or «fun».

## In Jewish tradition

Laban says he would have sent Jacob off with mirth and songs. In Sefer Yetzirah mirth is linked to a letter.

**Interpretation.** Sefer Yetzirah links the letter Qoph with mirth, the sign Pisces, the month Adar and the spleen. Adar is the month of joy at Purim.
