# mostly

adverb

«mostly» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

1. Mostly means almost all, or the biggest part. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/M/mostly/#m1)
2. Mostly means usually, most of the time. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/M/mostly/#m2)

### In the lessons

In reading, mostly tells you something is true for the largest part but not all. In science, the Earth's surface is mostly water; air is mostly nitrogen. In maths and data, "mostly" points to the biggest group in a chart. Phrases: mostly sunny, made mostly of, mostly true.

### Examples

- The sky was mostly blue with a few clouds. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/M/mostly/#x1)
- The Earth's surface is mostly covered by water. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/M/mostly/#x2)
- I mostly walk to school. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/M/mostly/#x3)
- The class was mostly girls. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/M/mostly/#x4)
- The story is mostly true. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/M/mostly/#x5)
- Our dog eats mostly dry food. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/M/mostly/#x6)

### Note

Mostly is not the same as "all": mostly true still has a part that is false. Do not confuse "mostly" with "most": "most children" (adjective) but "the children were mostly happy" (adverb). In a maths problem, "mostly" means more than half, but you cannot get an exact number from it.
