# navel

noun (a navel, navels)

«navel» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

1. The small hollow or bump in the middle of your tummy, left where the umbilical cord was joined before you were born; your belly button. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/N/navel/#m1)
2. (figurative) The centre of something, as in "the navel of the world". [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/N/navel/#m2)

### In the lessons

Used in science and health (the umbilical cord carries food and oxygen from mother to baby) and in everyday talk, though children usually say "belly button". Phrases: "navel orange" (an orange with a little bump like a navel), "navel-gazing" (thinking too much about yourself).

### Note

Homophone trap: "naval" (to do with a navy and ships) sounds the same but is spelled with an "a". Countable.

## In Jewish tradition

Interpretation: In Proverbs it stands for the whole body being healthy. Tradition reads the verse as saying that following wisdom and the Torah brings health. In Ezekiel the uncut navel shows how helpless Jerusalem was at its birth, before God cared for her. In the primary lessons: Used in science and health (the umbilical cord carries food and oxygen from mother to baby) and in everyday talk, though children usually say "belly button". Phrases: "navel orange" (an orange with a little bump like a navel), "navel-gazing" (thinking too much about yourself).
