2. (science) A lump or swelling, such as a lymph node in the body. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/N/node/#m2)
3. (plants) The place on a stem where a leaf or bud grows. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/N/node/#m3)
4. (computing) One device or point in a network, like a computer connected to others. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/N/node/#m4)

### In the lessons

In maths, a node is a point on a graph or network diagram where lines meet. In science, lymph nodes are small glands that help fight infection (they can swell when you are ill). In plant lessons, cuttings are made just below a node. In computing, each computer in a network is a node.

### Examples

- The nurse felt the lymph nodes in my neck. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/N/node/#x1)
- Cut the stem just below a node to grow a new plant. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/N/node/#x2)
- In the network diagram, each circle is a node. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/N/node/#x3)
- Every node on the map is a station where train lines meet. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/N/node/#x4)
- The leaves grow from the nodes on the stem. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/N/node/#x5)
- If one node in the network breaks, messages can go another way. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/N/node/#x6)

### Note

Countable. Do not confuse with «nod» (moving your head). In maths networks, nodes are also called vertices (one vertex), and lines are called edges or arcs. In physics, a node on a vibrating string is a point that does not move.
