noun (a noise, noises; noise — uncountable)

«noise» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

1. A noise is a sound, often loud or unpleasant or unexpected. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/N/noise/#m1)
2. Noise (uncountable) is loud, unwanted sound in general: «There's too much noise». [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/N/noise/#m2)

### In the lessons

In science, sound is made by vibrations; noise is sound that is loud, messy or unwanted. Loud noise can damage your hearing, so cover your ears at very loud places. In safety, strange noises (a smoke alarm beeping, a car engine, a dog growling) can warn of danger. In class, «keep the noise down» means be quieter. Phrases: «make a noise», «make noise», «background noise».
