In geography and science: a compass needle points north; the North Pole; in the northern half of the world the sun is in the south at noon. Phrases: to the north, north of, the north side, up north, north-east, north-west, North Pole.

Opposite directions (north and south) take away to find the distance from the start; the same direction adds. Trap: the total distance walked is still the sum. Trap: «birds fly north in spring» is true in the northern half of the world; in Australia and New Zealand it is the other way.

## In Jewish tradition

In the Tabernacle the north side held the table of the showbread, and the border of the land was drawn with north as a main direction.

**Interpretation.** In Sefer Yetzirah north is one of the six directions and is among the boundaries God sealed.
