### Meaning

1. (euphemism, polite) false; wrong; a lie.
2. (literal) partly right and partly wrong.

### In the lessons

Officials, politicians, teachers and polite people use it to say that something is false without calling anyone a liar. Polite and formal register, all English-speaking countries; very common in news, apologies and debates.

### Examples

- The minister's statement was not entirely accurate.
- That's not entirely accurate, Tom — you broke the window too.
- The map is not entirely accurate; the river is further west.
- «Not entirely accurate» is a polite way of saying «not true».
- Your answer of 45 is not entirely accurate; it should be 54.
- The company admitted its advert was not entirely accurate.

### Note

In politics it often means «untrue» or «a lie», but sometimes it really means «partly right». Look at the facts. Plain words: wrong, false, untrue, a lie.
