### Meaning

1. (literal) not up to now, but maybe later.
2. (euphemism, jargon, school) a fail grade; the pupil has not passed the standard so far.

### In the lessons

Some schools, mainly in the USA and Canada, write «Not Yet» instead of «Fail» to encourage pupils and stress that they can still learn it. In everyday speech it simply means «not now, maybe later». Everyday register; the grade use is jargon in education.

### Examples

- Have you finished your homework? Not yet.
- The bus hasn't come yet.
- Her maths test came back with «Not Yet» instead of an F.
- I can't swim yet, but I'm learning.
- «Not yet» means you haven't passed, but you still can.
- We're not there yet, keep walking.

### Note

As a grade it means «fail» for now. Word order: «I haven't finished yet» (yet at the end in negatives) and «not yet» as a short answer. Plain words for the grade: fail, not passed.
