### Meaning

(euphemism, humorous) completely mad or very strange.

### In the lessons

Used jokingly to say someone is crazy or very odd; a fruitcake has many nuts, and «nutty» means crazy. Humorous register, all English-speaking countries; can be unkind about real illness.

### Examples

- Our neighbour is as nutty as a fruitcake — she walks her cat on a lead.
- My grandad's nutty as a fruitcake, but great fun.
- That idea is as nutty as a fruitcake.
- He painted his car pink with spots — nutty as a fruitcake.
- You're nutty as a fruitcake if you think I'll eat that.
- The teacher called the plan «nutty as a fruitcake».

### Note

It is a pun on «nutty» (full of nuts, and crazy). A «fruitcake» alone can also mean a crazy person. Do not use it about people with real mental illness. Plain words: mad, crazy, very strange.
