## In Jewish tradition

In the Torah, an oak is a large tree often marking a burial place or a holy meeting spot. The prophets name the oaks of Bashan as tall, strong trees, used to stand for proud, mighty things, and their wood was used for ship oars.

**Interpretation.** The oak under which Deborah was buried was named Allon-bacuth, "oak of weeping," and tradition sees it as a mark of deep mourning. The prophets' picture of the oaks of Bashan falling is read as God bringing down the proud.
