### Meaning

(euphemism, polite) middle-aged or old; no longer young.

### In the lessons

People use it to mention that someone is older without saying a number or «old», especially about women, to be polite or a bit humorous. Polite register, all English-speaking countries.

### Examples

- She is a lady of a certain age who loves dancing.
- Songs for listeners of a certain age.
- Men of a certain age often start cycling.
- When you reach a certain age, you need glasses for reading.
- People of a certain age will remember cassette tapes.
- Don't ask her how old she is — let's just say she's of a certain age.

### Note

It never says which age; it means «older». Said too often about women it can sound condescending. Plain words: old, older, middle-aged.
