### Meaning

1. (euphemism, polite) with little money, unable to pay more; usually a pensioner.
2. (literal) having an income that does not change, like a pension or a benefit.

### In the lessons

Used in politics, news and polite talk to describe old or poor people whose money does not grow, so price rises hurt them. Polite register, mainly USA, also elsewhere.

### Examples

- Many pensioners are on a fixed income and can't afford higher rents.
- Gran's on a fixed income, so we help with her bills.
- Price rises hit people on fixed incomes hardest.
- If your income is fixed at 100 a week and prices go up 10%, you can buy less.
- The politician promised to help seniors on fixed incomes.
- I'm on a fixed income, I can't pay for the trip.

### Note

In maths: a fixed income stays the same, so when prices rise the same money buys less. Plain words: poor, pensioner, little money.
