### Meaning

(everyday) autistic; on the autism spectrum.

### In the lessons

People use it as a short, neutral or gentle way to say someone is autistic; autism is a «spectrum» because it shows in many different ways and strengths. Everyday register, all English-speaking countries. Many autistic people say «autistic» themselves; both are used.

### Examples

- My brother is on the spectrum and loves trains.
- Some kids on the spectrum find loud noises hard.
- Our teacher explained what it means to be on the spectrum.
- She was told she was on the spectrum when she was ten.
- He's on the spectrum and brilliant at maths.
- Being on the spectrum is not an illness; it's a different way of thinking.

### Note

Do not use it as a joke or insult («you're so on the spectrum»), which is hurtful. The «spectrum» is not a straight line from mild to severe. Plain word: autistic.
