### Meaning

(euphemism, everyday) not drinking alcohol, especially after drinking too much in the past.

### In the lessons

People say it to mention that someone has stopped drinking without talking about alcohol problems directly. Everyday register, all English-speaking countries; «fall off the wagon» = start drinking again.

### Examples

- No wine for me, I'm on the wagon.
- Dad's been on the wagon since New Year.
- He fell off the wagon at the party.
- She's on the wagon for a month to save money.
- Staying on the wagon is hard at weddings.
- «On the wagon» comes from the water-cart days.

### Note

It is not about real wagons. «Fall off the wagon» is the opposite. It can be about any bad habit jokingly (on the chocolate wagon). Plain words: not drinking, sober.
