## In Jewish tradition

The Tanakh often says God hears the cry of the poor and saves them from their oppressors, as He saved Israel from Egypt.

**Interpretation.** Tradition teaches that God is the defender of the weak and that people must not oppress the stranger, the widow or the orphan, remembering they were slaves in Egypt.
