### Meaning

1. (euphemism, official) money you still owe and have not yet paid.
2. (literal, accounting) the amount left on an account after payments.

### In the lessons

Banks, shops and companies use it on bills and letters to say «you owe us money» in a calm, formal way. Official register, all English-speaking countries.

### Examples

- Your outstanding balance is 50 dollars.
- Please pay the outstanding balance within 14 days.
- If the bill is 80 pounds and you paid 30, the outstanding balance is 50.
- The letter about my outstanding balance was very polite and very scary.
- There's an outstanding balance on the library fines.
- The shop won't sell more until the outstanding balance is paid.

### Note

«Outstanding» here does not mean «excellent»; it means «not yet paid». In maths: balance = total − paid. Plain words: debt, money owed.
