# ox

noun (ox, oxen)

«ox» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

1. An ox is a big strong farm animal like a bull, used to pull carts and ploughs. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/O/ox/#m1)
2. «As strong as an ox» means very strong. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/O/ox/#m2)

### In the lessons

## In Jewish tradition

A clean animal that may be eaten and offered in sacrifice, and a working animal with legal protections.

**Interpretation.** The rules that the ox may not be muzzled while threshing and may not be yoked with an ass are read as teaching kindness to animals. The ox also rests on the Sabbath.
