## In Jewish tradition

In the Torah a new house must have a parapet on its flat roof, so that no one falls off and brings blood-guilt on the house.

**Interpretation.** Tradition reads this as a command to protect life: one must remove dangers from one's home. The rabbis extended it to any hazard, such as an uncovered pit.
