### Meaning

(euphemism, polite) fart; let air out of the bottom.

### In the lessons

Doctors, nurses and polite people (especially in the USA) use it to talk about farting without a rude word. Polite register, mainly USA; UK English uses «pass wind».

### Examples

- The doctor asked if he had passed gas after the operation.
- It's normal to pass gas several times a day.
- Someone passed gas in the lift — gross!
- Babies often pass gas after feeding.
- Beans can make you pass gas.
- «Pass gas» sounds much nicer than «fart».

### Note

It has nothing to do with petrol (US «gas»). UK: «pass wind». Children may laugh at it; it is still a polite phrase. Plain word: fart.
