# penguin

noun (a penguin, penguins)

«penguin» in the English dictionary: everyday — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

A black-and-white sea bird that cannot fly, swims very well using its wings as flippers, and lives mostly in the cold far south. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/P/penguin/#m1)

### In the lessons

In science, penguins are birds (they have feathers and lay eggs) that are adapted to cold: thick fat, tightly packed feathers and huddling together. They live in the Southern Hemisphere — Antarctica, and also South Africa, South America, Australia and New Zealand — not at the North Pole. Emperor penguin fathers keep the egg warm on their feet. Phrases: «emperor penguin», «a colony of penguins», «waddle like a penguin».

Countable. Trap: penguins and polar bears never meet in the wild — penguins live in the south, polar bears in the north. Penguins are birds, not mammals or fish.
