# person

noun (person, people, persons)

«person» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

1. A person is a man, woman or child, one human being. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/P/person/#m1)
2. «In person» means really there, not on the phone or on a screen. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/P/person/#m2)
3. In grammar, person shows who is speaking: I is first person, you is second person, he or she is third person. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/P/person/#m3)

### In the lessons

In maths: a thing counted; «per person» or «each person» gives a share or rate; the number of people. In everyday life: «per person» prices, «a kind person», «meet in person». In grammar: first, second and third person. In stories: «a mysterious person».

### Note

«Per person» or «each person» marks a rate: total = per person × people; a share = total ÷ people. Trap: plural is «people», not «persons» in most problems. «Persons» appears only on official signs («no more than 8 persons»). Safety: a person you meet online is not someone you know in person.

## In Jewish tradition

In this text it often stands for a human being or a "soul" (nefesh), as in "any person who sins". The corpus examples show "the people" instead.

**Interpretation.** The Hebrew nefesh, often translated "person" or "soul", reminds us that each life counts as a whole being. Tradition teaches that saving one life is like saving a whole world.
